The Pathé West Coast Studio was located in California's first film colony, Edendale, a neighborhood in Los Angeles.

Pathé was primarily a film exchange company (the old name for film distributor) in the U.S. but began movie production at their New Jersey studio where they were criticized for making westerns that were not very realistic.  As a result, the company hired James Young Deer, a Native American actor, to open a studio in Edendale and produce realistic westerns.  Young Deer produced and directed more than 150 movies while in Edendale.
